Financial Accountant / Versicherungsbuchhalter (m/f/d) - HGB & Bordereaux

Finance & Accounting

About the Role

Wrisk Europe GmbH, a subsidiary of UK insurtech leader Wrisk is a rapidly growing European Managing General Agent (MGA) on an exciting expansion journey. We are seeking a Financial Accountant / Versicherungsbuchhalter to join our team, based in either our Munich or London office. This role is ideal for a finance professional who combines strong local statutory reporting knowledge (German GAAP / HGB) with hands-on experience in technical insurance accounting (Bordereaux reconciliation).

  • This role offers far more than standard day-to-day accounting. You will take ownership of our finance and accounting function, acting as the key driver of our local financial operations.
  • While partnering closely with our UK-based Group Finance team, you will have the autonomy to shape local processes, establish robust controls, and guide the development of the function as we scale across the EU.
  • If you are a hands-on, technically strong qualified accountant who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and loves having a direct impact, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Financial & Statutory Reporting: Own the month-end process, cash flow management, and financial reporting for our German subsidiary under German GAAP (HGB), coordinating monthly group reporting with our UK parent entity
  • Insurance & Bordereaux Management: Manage insurer payments and the end-to-end bordereaux process in conjunction with the Wrisk data and Group Finance Team.
  • Tax & Compliance: Partner with external advisors to manage local tax compliance (VAT, Corporation Tax, Transfer Pricing) and coordinate local German payroll
  • Treasury & Day-to-Day Operations: Oversee day-to-day finance admin (supplier payments, invoice postings, and employee expenses) and cash flow forecasting
  • Audit & Controls: Maintain strong financial controls and provide key support and evidence for insurer and statutory audits
  • Performance Insights: Prepare and monitor financial KPI and management information to help guide commercial deals and business decisions.

Requirements

  • What We’re Looking For Education & Credentials:
  • A degree or professional qualification in finance, accounting, or a related discipline
  • Insurance Sector Expertise:
  • Solid experience within an MGA, insurance broker, intermediary, or insurer, including a strong grasp of insurance-specific processes (bordereaux, premium collections, insurer payments, and premium reconciliations)
  • Technical Accounting:
  • Proven experience with German GAAP (HGB) accounting requirements, financial reporting, and supporting statutory reporting
  • Financial Controls & Cash Flow:
  • A track record of maintaining robust financial controls and managing cash flow within a high-performing finance function
  • Data & Tools:
  • Strong systems experience, including advanced Excel skills, with a knack for analyzing data and improving reporting processes
  • Soft Skills & Independence:
  • Highly organized with a sharp eye for detail, the ability to work independently as our sole local representative, and excellent communication skills to collaborate with internal stakeholders, OEM partners, and external advisors
  • Languages:
  • Professional German (essential for reading local financial statements and HGB compliance) and fluent
  • English (group working language).
  • Location Flexibility:
  • Based in (or open to hybrid working in) London or Munich.

Great to Have (Desirables)

  • Experience in a fast-paced start-up, scale-up, or rapidly growing international business.
  • Experience managing finance operations independently or as the sole finance representative for a specific entity or region.
  • Familiarity with supporting a regulated insurance business and understanding relevant regulatory reporting.
  • Experience working directly with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors.
  • Knowledge of German VAT, corporate tax, and transfer pricing.
  • A passion for tech, with experience in finance automation, reporting tools, data analysis, or SQL.

Benefits

  • What We Offer
  • The chance to shape and grow a key European subsidiary from the ground up
  • A collaborative, international team culture with minimal bureaucracy
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Flexible hybrid working policy (office + work from home)
